Hard drive manufacturers are coming up with more and more sophisticated external storage devices every year. This month, we saw the birth of the first external hard drive to take advantage of the extremely fast and relatively new SuperSpeed USB v3.0 with the introduction of Western Digital’s My Book 3.0. This baby is announced to be the fastest external drive ever produced by the company. This is very promising since SuperSpeed USB v3.0 can theoretically reach ultra fast transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second.
The device features a very simple design. Except for the LED activity indicator and the fact that it closely resembles a book, there isn’t really much to say about the appearance of the device. Some models of My Book come with the optional USB 3.0 HBA controller card adapter to enable users to add USB v3.0 capability to their desktop computers. At present, SuperSpeed USB v3.0 technology is still very new and can only be found in high end motherboards and laptops. Please take note however that the adapter requires an available PCIe slot to install it. If you decide not to include the controller card in your purchase, it can still be used on a standard USB v2.0 port but you won’t be taking advantage of the higher transfer speeds the My Book 3.0 is capable of. I’d also like to add that this product is very quiet compared to other external drives even if it operates at very high speeds.
This newest addition to Western Digital’s product line is truly something to talk about. It is very fast and provides high storage capacity. Although priced a little steep at $280.00, you will getting a drive that is probably the fastest one available at the moment.
